Earthquakes in Wellington

Just a quick post to let you know that we have been experiencing some severe earthquakes since Friday. We live 30kms north west of Wellington city and have not felt many of the aftershocks BUT we have felt the large shakes.

The most recent 6.8 magnitude tremor was a very large one and we are understandably feeling on edge.

We have not found any damage in our home so far but we are definitely on alert and have checked our emergency supplies.

Thanks Ruth. Your seismic experiences have been high in our minds since Friday. Not a lot of news from the top of the South Island yet so I hope they are OK.

It has been full-on at times Leanne. Rescue Remedy has been in demand. Sorry to hear of your breakages. So far people seem to be safe which is the main thing.

These big earthquakes certainly frighten us. I was looking at your photo that you said was skewed and thought that is how my world is feeling right now – skewed off balance by earthquakes. We hope things will settle but it may take a few days the experts are telling us:-(

Thanks. You are utterly accurate about last night being a restless one. We only felt a few of the aftershocks but our senses are on high alert so a noisy vehicle gets a lot more attention than it used to. You will be very aware of what we are going through but moreso.

Yes, and I am feeling quite anxious on your behalf which isn’t really very helpful. And, of course, wondering if more of our faults will be stirred to life again.

Hmmm I know what you mean. It was how I felt when Christchurch had its dreadful earthquakes. Having lived in Wellington for most of my life we have it well in our heads that we are the most vulnerable place in New Zealand for earthquakes.
Living 30kms northwest of Wellington City seems to be shielding us from the worst of the aftershocks so far.

I’m so glad you are doing okay at this moment. We don’t have earthquakes here in my area of Colorado, although, we have had them triggered by the Coal Mines and the Gas and Oil People…I’m still sending Magic Thoughts to you for safety!

Your Magic seems to be working here so far today. Thank you!!There is talk here of fracking which will cause earth tremors near such sites – I doubt we need any more quaking earth in New Zealand.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. We are safe to date. Our house seems to withstand earthquakes well and the land it is built on seems very stable….we hope! Nature is a powerful force.
