Winter light

Grey clouds, low light, icy rain and freezing winds this week have seen us indoors so much of the time. It is easy to gaze wistfully out a window hoping for a clearance in such weather. No such clearance has been forth-coming but yesterday the sun did break through at times and just after mid- afternoon offered me this image of winter light, soft greens and a warmth that was definitely lacking in the air. Winter sunlight can surprise us at times as it shines into corners mostly shaded and dark.

Beautiful, Lyn. I love the slanting sunlight of winter. By contrast, we’re having a heatwave here in the UK and people in the Midlands and the east are being advised to stay indoors between 11 and 3 (I can’t remember hearing that before!)

Thanks Jo. This little slant of sunshine was a real, but welcome, surprise. I had cleared a lot of ladder ferns out before winter so perhaps that opened up the space more. Crikey a heat-wave in England! The Polar Vortex has shifted slightly evidently allowing this antarctic air to blow our way. The weather boffins had been predicting a warm winter but their tune seems to be changing now. We don’t have central heating in most houses in NZ so the unheated parts of the house are icy cold. However the light is inching back so there is hope:-)

We are so very cold today. Haven’t seen a peek of sun all day, except on this image of yours. It looks almost summer like though I know you are just as cold as we are.

It was a welcome warm patch yesterday. I heard that there was snow on the Port Hills today so perhaps you are colder than us but we are not enjoying this bitter cold and wet.

You’ve captured the winter light just perfectly Lynley. I’ve been photographing it too – winter is so mysterious.
