On the days last week when the sky was expansively blue and mostly empty of clouds I did notice one cloud that seemed to stretch in a narrow band across the sky.
New Zealand is also known as Aotearoa and one translation that has been popular in my lifetime is “Land of the Long White Cloud”. This certainly was the case at times last week.

Wordless Wednesday. Monday’s sunset.
Good night Friday
A surprising sunset
As dusk began to come down and the predicted clouds began to roll in the sun and sky responded in some unusual displays.
The last of sun was disappearing behind a hill as I went out into the gloomy garden.
It was very surprising to notice some minutes later that the sky had lightened again and these lovely crepuscular rays were brightening the garden. Out I went again with my camera.
This light display was very short-lived giving way to the darkness almost within seconds.

Wordless Wednesday: Goodnight Full Moon
Bushfire sky on Saturday
The ash and smoke from the devastating Australian bushfires drifts to New Zealand’s atmosphere on the prevailing north westerly winds. We have had plenty of those this summer.
Any sunshine this morning, long after dawn, is a strange orangey red. The day is very cloudy and cool but the sky looks like this when the sun can shine through.
Twilight sky and the new moon
The twilight sky tonight was both dramatic, and in different directions, very understated. Here are some photos I snapped this evening.
I even captured a blurry new moon.
I need a tripod to stop night time photo blur but you can see the thin fingernail of a new moon as the daylight begins to sneak in here again, second by increasing second, each day.
Rain, colour, light and the sunset
Last night as the sun was setting the sky and house were filled with golden light which attracted my attention.
It was raining heavily and to the east and south there was an impressive rainbow and in fact, to the south a double rainbow, the second one faint and softly hued.
The sky was a real mix of pink and golden tones…….with a purple toning in the mix too.
